Pisanki - Polish Easter Eggs

The oldest Polish Easter egg dates the 10th century. The art of eggs decoration has survived many centuries, and even though the symbolism has changed, the tradition is still very much alive in Poland. Each region had a different design and very often, a regional distinct color, or its intensity. In Lublin Region in the Eastern Poland, eggs had a variety of sunshines pattern and black cross in the circle with the vibrant coloring base. Traditionally, pattern was drawn using a bee wax, and then eggs were dipped in a natural dye. For example, red beets were used to obtain red/purple color. Once dried, wax was removed from the egg leaving a white clear design ready for the Eastern table.

There was lots of beliefs and symbolism related to Easter eggs. First, they had to be blessed in the Easter basket along with other goodies. Pisanki were also believed to have a healing power. They were kept for a good luck and abundance. They were protecting homes from storms, lightning and other natural disasters. They were a symbol of friendship and good wishes.
